How I Explain Death to a Child

When a child loses someone they love, they will ask where they went. Whether it’s a grandparent, a beloved pet or even a raccoon on the side of the road, they want to know what death means.

This is what I say; You know how babies come out of their mommy’s tummy? Before a baby is born, it’s in heaven with all kinds of people who love them. Then when it’s time for them to be born, they come to their mommy from heaven. When someone dies, they go back to heaven. They are very sad to leave the people that they love here. But they go back to all of the people who loved them before they were born.
