The Car Accident

Imagine that you’re on your way to work. There’s a blizzard, 20 below zero, and snow blowing so hard that you can barely see out of your windshield. Your brakes fail and you skid off the icy road and smash into a tree, knocked unconscious. A good Samaritan calls 911 and tries to keep you warm until the ambulance arrives.

The snow drifts get higher and higher as the unrelenting wind keeps blowing. The ambulance can’t get through the unplowed streets. The snowplow driver can’t plow because they caught the flu from their child, who caught it from a kid at day care.

You die.

Who’s responsible? The mechanic for not fixing your brakes properly? The parent who brought a sick child to day care because they would lose their job if they missed work and had no other option? The city council for not adequately funding the snowplowing agency so that they could hire backup drivers? The ambulance driver, for not finding a passable route? Or, your boss for requiring you to get to work in a blizzard?

Everyone is responsible. We are all in this life together and we all have a part to play. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do for a living. What matters is knowing that no one’s life is separate. Whether we can see it or not, we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves. All of our lives are intertwined and our thoughts, actions and intentions will affect others in ways that we may not be aware of.

Dead people say: Open your eyes! Let yourself see the beauty and the possibilities in being part of something so exciting.

The ripple effect of our lives is unknown to us.

    • I like the way you put it ‘a positive ripple’.
I believe that ‘Wherever your heart is, your actions will follow.’
